LANDSCAPING TIPS

Lawns: A beautiful lawn is an enduring symbol of the American dream, improving the aesthetic and monetary value of a home or property.

Cutting height and Mowing pattern:

Tip: Because of the warm climate in Hawaii, grasses should be cut to a height of 2 to 3 in. to develop a healthy grass root system and a leaf canopy, which chokes weeds and retains soil moisture.

Tip: Vary the mowing pattern at times when cutting to create a uniform turf appearance. By varying your patterns, you will train the grass to grow more upright.

When to bag, mulch or discharge:

Whether you mulch, side discharge, or collect clippings will be determined by your desire to compost, the climate in your area, the types of trees on your property, and local landfill regulations.

Tip: Vacuum collection - Several situations are ideal for vacuum collection. A clean-swept appearance is important for high-profile areas. Removing thatch and fallen leaves. Turf quality and appearance improve when overgrown clippings, weeds and tree seeds are removed.

Tip: Side Discharging Clippings - Side discharging is the traditional method of distributing clippings, and works well as long as they are distributed evenly.

Tip: Mulching of clippings - Mulching mower decks enables to cut and recut clippings into small pieces and discharges them under the turf canopy where they rapidly decompose and nourish the lawn. This method is not recommended for all types of grasses especially in Hawaii. There are numerous guidelines to follow when using this method. Blades must be sharp at all times, the grass must be dry, and you cannot let the height of grass build and develop prior to this method.

Aeration:

The lawn institute of America estimates that up to 90% of lawns in the United States would benefit from periodic aeration. The need for aeration results from compacted soil. Soil can be compacted by excessive foot traffic or other means and can occur naturally over time in clay-type solid.

Tip: to recognize this symptom look for excessive water runoff, standing water in lawn after rain or watering, and bare ground or spotty grass growth.
